Got the beta of Swype a couple of days ago for my G1 and I didn’t have huge hopes for it. Figured I would give it a try and then uninstall it.
I was pleasantly surprised, it’s really good! It’s fast, it’s easy to use. It’s the first time I’ve felt like maybe I could get used to typing on a touch screen keyboard and I’ve had my G1 for almost 1.5 years already.
I don’t think you can beat the tactile feel of a blackberry keyboard but Swype really brought up my typing speed on the G1 to a whole new level. It’s an amazing product and it actually makes me not hesitate to type out long responses on my phone.

There’s an old joke about two campers in the woods. They see a bear approaching and one guy starts putting on his running shoes. The other guy goes, what are you crazy? You can’t outrun a bear. The guy with the running shoes replies, I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.
It’s a silly joke but there’s a story there that I’m starting to realize. I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun the other guy.
Too often, I don’t start or do things because I don’t believe I can be the best or I set my goals too high. But reaching a smaller goal is better than reaching no goal and sometimes, just out running the other guy is good enough.

I’m not sure when it happened but I’ve been getting into fashion lately and shoes specifically recently.
I’ve been looking for a pair of wingtips. So much I don’t know about shoes. I had to figure out what open vs closed lacing meant. Surprisingly, I found the answer on knol.

I keep thinking about it every time I read the Sunday comics but I keep forgetting to post about it.
Why is Cathy the comic still around. I wonder what the demographic of the comic is and haven’t people gotten bored of it?
I’m sure there’s a better comic out there, how is Cathy still around?

I’ve never been good with todo lists but I tend to do pretty well with checking emails and managing my life that way. I’ll send myself reminders to do stuff in email and leave it unread.
I’m trying out a new system for that though because I just had too many emails in my inbox. I’m gotten down to inbox zero and I’m looking into a 3 folder system or a 5 folder system.
Just having an empty inbox so far has been quite liberating and it was quite a fun exercise going through 6 years of old emails and archiving them. It was almost like looking at old pictures. Remembering what was happening at that point in my life and thinking about what has changed since.

I’m usually not a fan of syntax highlighting. The colors just throw me off. But I spent about 30 minutes today hunting down a bug because I missed a quote.
It took me 30 seconds with emacs font-lock-mode on. So I’m turning it back on for now and I’m going to try to get used to it.

I’ve been slipping back into old habits and that’s not a good thing. Been procrastinating and just generally wasting time.
I want to use the excuse that I’ve been really tired as well but I’m not sure how valid that is.

The first half of January is over already but it’s been a pretty productive half.
I’ve always had the problem of getting started. Once I get going, I can keep my momentum pretty well but it’s always those first few steps that have always been hardest. So this year is all about getting started. I don’t like the term new year resolutions because I’ve always believe that if it’s something you want to do, why wait for a new year. Just do it. I like to think that my starting so close to the new year is more coincidental than having anything to do with the new year.

It’s amazing what you can do with all these web services out there today.
I had an idea to do an exquisite corpse story telling idea through a phone number and I setup something using Twilio in a matter of hours. I had a phone number you could call and leave a message and a basic web page where you could come back and hear the message you left. The whole thing took maybe 200 lines of code and it’s done. Sure it’s basic but it’s great to be able to get up a proof of concept so quickly and easily.

I’ve been slightly lusting after the new Nexus One phone from google. Though I keep going back and forth from really wanting it to being meh about it. I’m definitely not willing to pay $530 for it.
I’m not eligible for an upgrade for another 8 months I think, after signing a 2 year contract for the G1 when it first came out. I really wish cell companies would offer 18 month contracts. That would be an ideal amount of time especially the speed which new phones come out. Either that or offer long time loyal customers some kind of upgrade path. I do feel slightly cheated at being an early adopter and then getting screwed when the next cycle comes around.
I think that’s also part of the reason why I’m not 100% sold on the nexus one, I’m sure something better will come along in a few months and then I’ll be able to pick up the nexus one for a steal.
