Back pain

I hurt my lower back last Thursday so I haven’t gone running since then. It felt a lot better yesterday so I tried going this morning but it’s still a little bit sore so I just went a short distance. Did about .6 miles in 7:27.
The good thing about me hurting my back is that I figured out what was doing it and how to prevent it in the future.
My back had been sore since last Thursday and it was slowly getting better but not fast enough. Then yesterday, I did some hamstring stretches and that helped tremendously. My hamstrings were so tight, they were pulling on my lower back and making it hurt. It was amazing how quickly I got results from a few easy stretches.
So in the future, hamstring stretch to take pressure off my lower back.
I also started to sleep on my side to take the pressue off my back, I had no idea that sleeping on your back is bad for you.

Just under 2 miles

Ran just under 2 miles today, 1.92 to be more exact. Well, I stopped for the traffic lights but those were brief. My time, 20:56. Ran it at a pace of 10:54/mile. If I can keep a pace of under 11/mile for a 5k, I’ll be happy for now. I’m beginning to feel like a real runner, hah. Here’s the route I ran.
Running is feeling like more of a mental challenge now because at a certain point I just want to quit and start walking but I make myself run no matter how slow and after a while, it becomes just a motion and if I don’t think about it, I feel like I can keep going.

Faster Mile

Did a shorter run today, just ran a mile but I did it in 10:30. It seems like my endurance is up for the longer runs but I’m still not that quick on the short ones. I figure with the endurance, the speed will just come naturally so I’m not too worried about it.

Week 3, day 1

Ran about 1.75 miles today. Time, 19:45. I ran for most of it, walked for about 3 mins. It definitely got easy at one point where I was just running and not thinking about it. I felt like I could have gone forever. Well, forever meaning an extra couple hundred feet probably. I feel really good after the run though, my legs aren’t very tired, no soreness, caught my breath really quickly.
I need to put some new music on the mp3 player. I think I’ve gone through the whole cycle of songs on there a few times already.
I also need a watch, I’ve been using the mp3 player as a stopwatch which works well except it’s hard for me to skip songs.
Here’s the longer route I took today, ran along the main road. Wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Ran a whole mile

I actually ran a whole mile today. Did it in 11:30. My time was much slower than when I ran/walked it but I ran it and that’s the important thing. I’m pretty sure I could have done it faster but my judgement of my endurance is still pretty inaccurate so I tend to run slower to pace myself. I also did a total of 5 miles this week, pretty proud of that as well. My love handles are pretty much gone. Gut is slowly shrinking as well.

Week 2, day 3

Did the same 1.5 mile route again today. I was a little bit faster today at 17:12. It felt more painful than the last run. I thought I was going to be slower when I was about halfway through the run so I’m pretty happy with the time.

Week 2, day 2

Ran a little bit longer today. I did about 1.5 miles in about 17:24. The first 1/3 mile of the route I ran was all uphill and then it’s a long downhill and then a very slight uphill the rest of the way. It was painful for a while there and then it felt good and then it started getting painful again towards the end.
I do notice that I recover much faster after a run, I catch my breath much faster, my legs don’t feel like they’re going to collapse on me, I don’t feel like I’m going to die.
Here’s the route I ran today.

Week 2

I had a hard time waking up this morning. My allergies were killing me yesterday so I don’t think I slept too well. Woke up this morning feeling like I was hung over or something. On top of all that, I think I slept wrong and my back was feeling sore. I made myself go run anyway. I wasn’t thinking about much when I started running and I started running the first half much faster than I have before. I have a tendency to run fast if I’m not thinking about it. I pushed myself a little harder today since I was already off to a fast start. Did the usual mile loop in about 10:36. Fastest time yet.
I’m going to have to up the mileage soon though, even if it means walking more.

Another Day, Another Mile

These updates are either going to get really boring or really exciting.
I did the one mile loop again, time 10:56.
I’m feeling strong though and I’m recovering much faster after the run.
Hopefully, my times will start improving and my updates will start to get exciting.

Another Morning Run

It was much harder to get myself motivated to go for a run this morning especially since my right leg was feeling a little bit sore.
I pushed myself to get up and go anyway. I ran the same route I ran yesterday, about a mile again but I consciously made myself run a little bit slower, I didn’t want to injure my right leg. My time ended up being 11:16.
I felt a lot stronger today than I have in previous runs. I could actually look around and take notice of my surroundings, pay attention to the song playing on my headphones, etc. Most of my previous runs have been concentrating on keeping myself my keeling over and dying. Hah!
I think that’s why I noticed that the second half of my run is all uphill, a small uphill most of the way but uphill none the less.
I live on a little hill so any run I do is going to have to be uphill on the return for the most part. For that reason, I picked what I thought was small downhill and then a flat section to do most of my run on until I noticed today that it wasn’t so flat after all.
I also need to put some new music on my mp3 player, I think hip hop would be a good running partner.
